Toronto – Abiy Ahmed’s Administration on Tuesday has officially announced that Let. General Tadesse Worede is appointed as the President of Interim Administration in Tigray in Northern Ethiopia. The news came a day after Getachew Reda was formally terminated – in a ceremony organized in the office of the Prime Minister.

The event regarding the appointment of Tadesse Worede is given a stature of an important political event in the country. Apart from senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community attended the signing ceremony of a document the Federal government prepared for Tadesse Worde.

It is not even two weeks since the Prime Minister shared a message in Tigrigna requesting People in the Tigray region to propose a leader to complete the transition until the next election. They were asked to provide it via email to the office of the Prime Minister . The call did not get a positive result from different groups for different reasons. The TPLF saw it as a unilateral move to appoint an interim president – which it said would violate the Pretoria Agreement.

Politicians from Tigray have started to react to the appointment. Gebru Asrat, former president of the region and executive committee member of the TPLF, questioned, during an interview with Ethiopian Reporter, “In whose name is Tadesse Worede coming to power?” Since Tadesse Worede was the leader of the Tigray army, he said he can not represent the armed forces in the region. He seemed to be convinced that he is representing the TPLF (apparently a reference to Debretsion’s faction of TPLF). Because the TPLF have reportedly expressed agreement if Tadesse takes over as Interim President. What is your take? Share it in the comment section.
