Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Tigray Regional High Court has ordered the freezing of the Tigray Interim Administration’s bank account.

The court issued the order to freeze the Interim Administration’s Commercial Bank of Ethiopia account in connection with unpaid back wages for teachers. Tigrayan teachers, who were not paid for 17 months during the two-year bloody northern war, took their case to court and received a ruling in their favor.

The Tigray High Court, which reviewed the case for over a year, had ruled that the Interim Administration should pay the teachers’ outstanding wages. However, it is alleged that the interim administration did not comply with the court order and failed to pay the teachers’ back wages.

The Tigray Teachers’ Association requested that Tigray Interim Administration President Lieutenant General Tadesse Worede and Tigray Finance Bureau Head Dr. Mihrete Beyene was arrested and brought to court for their explanations regarding the whereabouts of the money.

The defendants’ lawyer argued that the money deposited in the regional finance bureau’s account was spent before the court issued its decision. The lawyer reportedly clarified that the money was spent on salaries for the interim administration’s employees.

Following this, the Tigray Teachers’ Association, the plaintiff on behalf of the teachers, requested that the bank account of the Interim Administration be frozen, stating that it did not respect the court’s decision. After examining the complaint filed by the plaintiff, the Tigray High Court ordered the freezing of the Interim Administration’s bank account.

On July 22, 2025, the Tigray High Court ordered a freeze on the administration’s bank accounts and began an investigation into the interim government.Verification of recipient accounts and fund transfer dates has been ordered by the court. The investigation’s follow-up hearing is scheduled for July 29, 2025.
