Toronto – The Ethiopian Defense Force does not seem to be able to meet the deadline it set as “final” to eliminate Fano forces from the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

Defense chief officials held a meeting with Amhara region leaders in November this year. The plan was to end the war in the region by the end of December by annihilating Fano forces.   It did not happen.

The Defense Force is still  claiming this week a major victory against Fano forces in many areas of the Amhara region. However, the Fano forces dismiss the claim as a pure propaganda ploy that no one would buy in the region. The major loss that Fano forces announced this week was in the Shewa area. Keganzmach Yitagesu Adamu, who was commanding the Nadew Division of Shewa Fano was confirmed dead, according to an Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) report. He reported suicide during combat, rather than surrender to government forces.

In the past few weeks, the government has been making further claims that a considerable number of Fano fighters “surrendered”  and laid down arms. So far no prominent Fano forces with a leader that is known to the people has not been announced.

The government also seems to be making claims via the National Dialogue Commission that a certain Fano group has requested to participate in the dialogue. Again, this too is not verified or substantiated. Yet, it further tarnished the image of the National Dialogue Commission which was facing credibility issues as a considerable number of opposition parties in the counties lost trust that it is a neutral body.

Meanwhile, Fano forces continue to report intensive battles in many areas of the Amhara region. Battle locations change daily or weekly. The battle in Shewa was ongoing for more than seven days, according to credible sources with links to the region. The government forces have allegedly targeted civilians with heavy shelling. Other than that the government forces have suffered losses, Fano forces claim. But the number of casualties was unspecified.

There were also battles in Gojjam and North Gondar area. In South Gondar, Fano claimed a major victory against government forces.

What is confirmed is that the government mission to take full control of the region by the end of December is a failed mission. Clearly, Fanos are still in control of many areas in the region.

The war was initially planned to be completed within a few weeks when it was launched in August 2023 with Fano forces “disarmed” – a mission that seems to be still impossible to achieve on the part of the government.

  1. “Yitagesu Adamu, commander of Nadew Division of Shoa Fano, reportedly took his own life rather than surrendering to the government forces “”Borkena confirmed. Borkena seem to defend his suicidal act and self-harm by highlighting his reasons for refusing to turn himself in to the government forces. Surrendering to opposing troops does not always result in executions or other heinous treatment. His decisions to self-harm are made based on mythology rather than well-thought-out plans. RIP!!!
