Toronto – Former member of the Ethiopian Defense Force and commander of Special forces in the Amhara region, General Tefera Mamo denies that Fano forces had any contact with Eritrea or Tigray forces.
“Although we do not have a relationship at this point, we will in the future,” Ethio News cited him as saying. General Tefera alleges that the regime in Ethiopia is working against Northerners targeting Amhara, Tigray and Eritrea. “That is what we have seen,” he added.
General Tefera said so in response to the question if he can confirm whether Fano forces are working with Eritrea and Tigray forces. The Ethiopian government has been accusing Fano forces of working with Eritrea.
About two weeks ago, the Ethiopian Defense Force made another claim this time linking fano’s “operation unity” to General Megbe Haile – a pro-Debretsion TPLF faction – who was also allegedly involved in criminal acts in the region. The Ethiopian government accuses him of undertaking an illegal gold trade via Eritrea.
Defense force alleged that it was General Megebe who planned “Operation Unity” – fano’s military offensive that targeted over 35 camps of the defense force across the Amhara region.
General Tefera calls the Defense force’s claims of the link between Fano forces operation and General Megbe a “provocation.”
He added “the operation was a success.” Fano is making remarkable progress. He also said that more and more youth are joining Fano forces.
The Ethiopian Defense force was on a move to deploy more forces to the Amhara region from Afar region and other directions. “Operation Unity” appears to be partly a response to that, based on General Tefera’s remark.
He tends to think that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government would have unleashed massive attacks had it not been for lack of military capability.
General Tefera Mamo has been under travel restriction outside of Ethiopia and under intelligence watch in Addis Ababa before he finally disappeared from Addis Ababa to join the Fano movement. It has been a year now since he took a military advisory role within the Fano forces.
