NAIROBI , Kenya – Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has donated the $50,000 honorarium he received from the University of Michigan in 2023 to two local organizations operating in the Tigray region. The funds are designated to support the rehabilitation and economic empowerment of women who suffered severe hardships during the recent conflict.
The donation was given during a press event today in Mekelle. It was announced that 5.2 million Ethiopian Birr was shared equally between the two groups. Mums for Mums and the Tigray Women’s Association each received 2.6 million Birr to help with their community recovery programs.
At the event, Ashenafi Asmelash, the CEO of Mums for Mums, said the money was very timely. He said that the mothers in Tigray are going through tough times after the war and that this support will greatly help their efforts to help women in need.
Abeba Gebreselassie, the chairperson of the Tigray Women’s Association, explained how the money would be used. She said the 2.6 million Birr would be given as 65,000 Birr each to women in their skills training programs. This will help them start small businesses and become financially independent.
The two-year war, which officially ended in late 2022, caused a lot of damage to the region. Women were especially affected, facing problems like losing homes, income, and dealing with trauma. Both groups said the money would be important for long-term recovery. They thanked Dr.Tedros for his generous donation and his support for the communities in his home region.

The gift/donation is the right thing to do and it went to the right group of people; our women, If it went to men they would get spend it all getting drunk with it. Hey Debre! Don’t even think about stealing some of this money!!!
Someone needs to check if a/ the two organizations are run and/or owned by Tedros’s family members b/ if and how the donation benefits Tedros’s finances.
Borkena,
You report that U of Michigan handed Tedros a $50K honorarium in 2023. And Tedros, uncharacteristically, passed the check onto two Tigrayan groups 3 years later. Fair enough.
Now let’s go over to U of Michigan and introduce ourselves to the gynecologist-obstetrician Dr. Senait Fisseha. What do Tedros and Senait have in common? First, they are long time friends. Senait it was who chaired the election campaign and transition of Tedros Adhanom when he ran for WHO leadership. Secondly, both used every means at their disposal to cry genocide and present Tplf as victim during the 2020-22 conflict even though Tplf was the group that started it by first looting federal arms depot and then massacring fellow army officers and Amhara residents of Maikadra in their thousands. Tplf had reported this on its radio before and after the incident. This is all documented.
Tedros, bizarrely, did something that no one of his position ever did. He used the power and resources of WHO offices to daily broadcast over social media that the Federal government of Ethiopia was committing genocide. Now everyone realizes it was mostly a propaganda campaign. The world, of course, was not aware of the fact that Tedros was himself a Central Committee member of the Marxist terror group that goes by the name Tplf.
Both Senait and Tedros were on a mission to advance the cause of Tplf. Once he won the WHO leadership, Tedros appointed Senait as his Chief Adviser and later with responsibilities to chair several global projects.
