Toronto – Taye Atske-Selassie is removed as Foreign Affairs Minister and appointed as President replacing Ethiopia’s first female president Sahle-Work Zewde who was appointed to the position in 2018.
News of the appointment came on Monday following a closed joint meeting of the House of People’s Representative and the House of Federation. According to sources, Taye was appointed with majority vote and five abstentions.
Taye Atske-Selassie was in the FM role for about eight or so months. He was appointed to the position after Demeke Mekonnen quit as Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
Sahle-Work Zewde was removed from her position weeks before her term expired. Two days ago, she shared what appears to be a sorrowful message on her personal X (formerly Twitter) page quoting a few lines of lyrics from Ethiopia’s prominent singer Mahumud Ahmed highlighting “silence” as a way out of the state of her emotions.
There have been reports that she was having a difficult working relationship with Abiy Ahmed and his colleagues. There were several occasions in the past one year where she spoke with a critical tone in connection with the ongoing wars in the country. There was also a time when she spoke about “Red Line” in connection with the massacre of ethnic Amhara’s in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
Like Sahle-Work Zewde, Taye has a background in career diplomacy. He has served Ethiopia as Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador to Egypt and Sweden, among others.
The Presidential position is mostly ceremonial with little or no policy impact or in the power dynamics in the country. Both Sahle-Work and Taye were not members of the ruling “Prosperity Party.”
It is unclear as to who is replacing Taye. There are speculations that Getachew Reda, whom the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) removed as Interim President of the Tigray in a statement issued on Monday, is going to be appointed to the position.
With an academic back in law which he studied at Addis Ababa University, Getachew Reda has a ministerial experience in government communication. He has also served as spokesperson of the TPLF which dominated power at the Federal level for more than three decades. As spokesperson for the organization and president of Interim government, Getachew has exposure to officials from the EU and the U.S. as the TPLF has been enjoying strong support from western powers.

I don’t see it as a removal. They are both veterans of diplomacy. But it is an interesting situation now. Who is going to take the place of H.E Taye as a minister of foreign affairs? How about an Afar or a Somali and a female one? Let’s do this, parliament!!!!
I just read reports of the phone line between Eritrea and Ethiopia is cutoff now. Who is disconnecting the phone line? We were all rejoicing when the reconciliation between these fraternal neighbors began in 2018. What is it now? Them niggers better not start another bloodshed! They better not!
As the GOAT commentator, Mr. Ittu Aba Farda, pointed out, the word “removed” in your title does not appear logical. He is elevated to the highest position, the presidency. He’s a president, not a minister. Either you enjoy characterizing his relocation from the ministerial position, which he was exploiting in your own image, or you misinterpret the word to indicate anything different. After all, you are an anti-prosperity party who want to install fanno activities in Toronto, Ethiopia.
Good luck with your wishful thinking and delusional dreams.
He did not get elevated to the highest position but rather was appointed to be a prostitute for little abiy. What kind of consciousness caused this man we regarded and respected to be a great ambassador of diplomacy to stoop down and agree to be used and abused by the insanity, incompetence, corruption, inhumanity and ineptitude of this fucked up government? What a shame ! Alas, it will be a very short lived appointment as the FANNO men and women will dismantle this cancer of a government for good. Taye just dug his own grave.
Sahlewerk and Taye are both from Shewa.
