Toronto – Ethiopia and Sweden  on Friday held talks  in Addis Ababa to discuss investment and trade. It appears regional issues – possibly the tension in the region is discussed.

Dag Hartelius, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden, met with Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopia’s Minister For Foreign Affairs at his office.

Their meeting came days after the Ethio-Sweden Business forum, which was organized in Addis Ababa.

A news release from the Ministry stated that the Minister  “reiterated Ethiopia’s keenness in enhancing trade and investment ties with Sweden and encouraged Swedish investors to expand their engagement in the country.”

Sweden seems to share the desire to enhance bilateral cooperation. Dag Hartelius is cited as saying Sweden has “interest in deepening bilateral relations based on solid cooperation, including through strong people-to-people ties.”

The Swedish Embassy in Addis Ababa did not share detailed information about the meeting of the two diplomats except saying it “focused on the celebration of 80 years of diplomatic relations next year, the recent Ethiopia-Sweden Business Forum, regional affairs and other matters of mutual interest.”

Dag Hartelius remarked, as reported by MFAE,  about the recent Ethio-Sweden Business Forum in Addis Ababa. He is said to have remarked that “Ethio-Sweden Business Forum held in Addis Ababa provided an important platform for business-to-business engagement that supports development.”

Twenty Swedish companies and over 100 Ethiopian “public and private” stakeholders reportedly participated in the business forum organized under the theme “we mean business”

Ethiopia and Sweden started diplomatic relations in the 1940’s. This week the embassy announced a logo design competition for the celebration. The winner will get 100,000 Ethiopian birr Award.

Sweden is a long time development partner to Ethiopia. The strategy document the government of Sweden released for Sweden-Ethiopia development cooperation for 2022-2026 highlighted the focus areas as human rights, democracy, the rule of law, environment, climate, inclusive economic development and “peaceful inclusive societies,” among other areas.  It is spending  SEK 1 700 million via Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
