Toronto – The Turkiye brokered Ethiopia-Somalia deal to end hostility and make arrangements for Ethiopia’s access to the sea has reportedly ended in fiasco.
The story made headlines on many media outlets after the African Intelligence reported about it on Thursday. Sources say the agreement collapsed after Somalia declined to offer Ethiopia sea access except for a commercial access arrangement in southern Somalia.
The government of Somalia has not released any official statement or remark about the report. Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not remarked either.
However, there appears to be circumstantial evidence that could trigger questions if the Ankara Declaration is still alive.
In a span of four days, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Egyptian President Abdul Fetah Al-Sisi in Cairo and then headed to Ankara where he met with president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
On July 7, Villa Somalia shared video footage, on its social media page, of Hassan Sheikh being greeted with a state reception at the palace of Al-Calamayn in Cairo. The two presidents held a meeting but the details of which were not released. Egypt and Somalia signed a military pact in August 2024 as the latter entered into hostility with Ethiopia over the Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland. There was also a bilateral agreement whereby Egypt sent a total of 10,000 troops to Somalia including as part of the African Union peace keeping mission.
On July 11, Hassan Sheikh met with Erdoğan in Ankara where he received a state reception. According to Villa Somalia, they discussed “issues including strengthening the strategic relations between the two countries, with a particular focus on boosting security cooperation and eliminating Khawaarij.”
Ethiopia has been opposing Egyptian military presence in Somalia due to national security forces. Egypt has been linked to, at least for over half a century, proxy war in Ethiopia by supporting rebel groups.
Following the Ankara Agreement, Ethiopia and Somalia appeared as if they left their disagreements behind and there are clear signs of what appeared to be cooperation. Hassan Shiek visited Ethiopia in January 2025. Abiy visited Somalia in February 2025. Also, bilateral military agreement was signed with the arrangement for Ethiopia to deploy thousands of troops in Somalia in addition to its 2500 troops as part of African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Somalia has been accusing Ethiopia of violating its sovereignty by signing a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland – a political entity that appears to be on the verge of gaining recognition as an independent state for which it has been campaigning for over three decades. Ethiopia is believed to be among countries that would recognize Somaliland. The weeks to come might share light as to what went wrong with rapprochement policies and efforts between Somalia and Ethiopia.

How does the writer of this article know the agreement signed between Somalia and Ethiopia is faltering? Is that because the president of Somalia traveled to Egypt? Is that because Somalia had forged an Alliance with Egypt and Eritrea? What is strange about that? Even if the alliance was meant against Ethiopia, then what to do with it? We have always to remember that Somalia is a sovereign nation and its president can pay an official visit to any country of his choice. He may bear the consequences but since he is not on the list of sanctioned individuals, his visit to Egypt and Eritrea or that matter, to Ethiopia itself should not be considered alarming. I expect him to be a very proud person and know that those superpower wannabes in Al-Qahirah deep in their hearts always see him as just as another ‘abd’ house nigger. They have found such house niggers with those ‘Black Italians’ in Piccola Roma since 1959. Above all, Brother President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud understands his more than 130 million neighbors next door need to have an outlet to sea. I expect him to be fair-minded that his peace mongering and harmonious people who he shares kinship with can not continue to live suffocated for lack of such an outlet.
I am asking myself the same question . How on earth this particular writer knows that the agreement signed between Somalia and Ethiopia is flattering. Which source did the writer used to support his allegations? Or which official statement from the concerned countries i.e. Somalia and Ethiopia. Is it another trick to divide the Somalia people opinion? I came to a conclusion the main objective of this so called write is to manipulate the general opinion of the Somalian people toward accepting a Ethiopia military base in its shore. What about swapping Somalia land occupied by Ethiopia for an access to sea That in my opinion will be more appropriate and given back to Somalia instead of asking only. Somalia don’t interfere in Ethiopia ongoing ethnic clashes as the Ethiopia does in Somalia but that will obviously come one day if Ethiopia persist to mangled in Somalia internal affairs. What’s go around comes around.
Folks
I have been working on a major project for the last 2 years and did not have the time to say even a word or two with you. I just completed the project and turned out to be the best one. It has to do with issues that have been nagging the two countries of Ethiopia and Somalia. I had run it by Brother President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and he loves it. He thinks I am a rare genius. I then ran it by those in Arat Kilo and they all shouted ‘Bravo! Bravo!!’ to me. Here is what I come up with, to make everybody happy. It is based on a land swap deal as described below so to give more than 130 million Ethiopians an outlet to sea.
1) Ethiopia will cede to Somalia the entire eastern region from Dewele to the eastern shore of the River Awash and the adjacent territory to the southwest of that, including the entire Arsi, Bale and Moyale up to the outskirt of Hawassa. Ethiopia must start removing all non-Somali people including but not limited to Issas, Harraris and Oromos(including my Itu clans) out of their current residential places. If you look at the recent history of these areas, they used to belong to Somalia run by a democratically elected government until Emperor Menelik conspired with Marx, Lenin, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Mao and Saddam Hussein and robbed away all these regions in 1952 from Somalia. I have found the map of that era hidden under the burial places of Emperor Menelik and Stalin.
2) In exchange Somalia will grant Ethiopia a spot on the tallest cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean just a stone throw away from El-Hur(Ceel Huur). The spot measures 100ft X 50ft. If you stand on the top of that cliff, you can see ships very far away in the Indian Ocean 6 days before they arrive. That will be more than what those more than 130 million Ethiopians need for an outlet to a sea. So everybody is happy with such a genius solution I came up with. I also had my plan looked at by Af-Mishaar here among us and told me it is a genius plan too. As you all know, Af-Mishaar is the only person who has the right foreign policy for the Horn of Africa since 1978. You better watch what you say about his late uncle Af-Woyne Siad Barre around him.
Excuse me for now because I’m busy helping my Itu clans move before the deadline which is this coming August 1, 2025.
