Toronto – Egypt is making an activity in the Horn of Africa that appears to be like “sieging” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia said today.

It was during a weekly Foreign Affairs briefing of Ethiopia’s diplomatic activity that spokesperson, Nebiyat Getachew, raised the issue.

“Egypt is making activity in the region in a manner that appears to be a siege [against Ethiopia], ” he stated. However, Ethiopia tends to see it as something not new.

The remark came days after Egyptian Minister for foreign affairs, Badr Abdelatty, led a delegation to where he met with President Isaias Afeworki. According to sources, an agreement was signed regarding the security of the Red Sea.

The two countries reportedly agreed that security of the Red Sea is the responsibility of the littoral states – insinuating that Ethiopia can not set foot in the area.

Ethiopia has been making claims that access to the Red Sea is a matter of existence – from a security and economic point of view.

Recently, there has been a report that the United States is working to mediate Eritrea and Ethiopia as both countries are on the verge of war.

Ethiopia’s Minister for foreign affairs, Gedion Timotheos, was in Washington D.C. last week. He met with Marco Rubio. One of the agenda items during their discussion was security in the region. The state department did not reveal any further information. However, it was made public that an agreement was signed  between the two countries including in the area of security.

Egypt has been signing agreements including a defense one with several neighboring countries to Ethiopia.  With Eritrea itself it has a defense agreement. Also, it has signed a defense agreement with Somalia.

A few months ago, Egypt also set its foot in Djibouti under the guise of “port development agreement.”  Ethiopia relies on Djibouti for its import and export trade.

In light of existing hostility,  there is a perception that Egyptian presence in Djibouti constitutes a security risk to Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has also been accusing Egypt of financing rebel groups within Ethiopia itself. Egypt has a recorded history of spending on rebel forces in Ethiopia for well over sixty years. Among others, Egypt was hosting the Eritrean Liberation Movement office in Cairo.

  1. It should not come as a surprise that Egypt is still hatching every evil scheme to destabilize the old country. It even has a history of invading the country just to end up with none of force left alive to tell about it. In our times it started its hostile ways in the late 1950’s and full throttle in early 1960’s. Those of us who were there then remember how Nasser put together those minuscule groups from Eritrea who swore to be Arabs. There was even one of those 1960 coup plotters who managed to escape the late Emperor’s dragnet and came to Cairo through Djibouti. Then others followed to be generously assisted by Nasser directly or his protégés like the various Palestinian groups. ELF, EPLF, OLF, ONLF and EPRP you name it they were all recipients of Nasser’s military and financial aid including boat loads of rice, sugar and salt. He had left the military training part of these groups to the Palestinian groups like the George Habash PFLP. The group he could not attract was the EDU because this group was able to muster the assistance of Gaafar Nimeiry of Sudan who was not in good terms with Nasser in the 1970’s. We know it and all these groups know it. Now el-Sisi is at it full speed boot licked by his loyal lapdogs in Asmara. He is pouring his pounds into the efforts of Al-Toweel arming and financing almost every violent armed group in Ethiopia. It has been working for the megalomaniacs in Cairo like a charm since the overthrow of the late Emperor. The old country has been in constant bloody conflicts since then. It also seems that regime in Addis/Finifinnie is playing into the playbook of el-Sisi by some of it’s not well thought statements. So those groups that have been receiving military and financial help from Asmara CAN NOT DENY the fact that they are receiving assistance from Cairo.
