Toronto – Ethiopia is rolling out a new vehicle license plate number registration nearly a year after the Ministry of Transportation announced it.
The current license plate numbers were based on those issued in the regional state bearing the ethnic identity of the federal states. The new system abolishes it in favor of a uniform countrywide plate number. It starts with the code “ET” instead of the initials of the ethnic-based states.
Leaked information on the implementation of the policy indicates, based on Borkena’s Addis Ababa-based reporter, that it costs up to 56,000 birr (about $498 Canadian) to get the new license.
The pricing is said to be different based on the type of fuel or energy vehicles use. Those vehicles using gasoline will be paying more compared to electric vehicles.
Borkena will update readers as more details become available.
