Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Reporter newspaper, which has been covering the House of People’s Representatives (Parliament) for the past 30 years, has announced that it has been barred from entering and reporting on parliamentary activities.
The newspaper stated that the ban was imposed for “unclear and unspecified” reasons. Since April 14, 2025, without any stated reason or official explanation from the parliament, security personnel at the entrance have prevented its reporters from entering, stating that “Reporter is not allowed to enter.”
The Reporter newspaper stated that when it inquired with parliament security personnel about why it was barred from entering and covering parliamentary activities, the security staff responded, “We were verbally instructed not to allow entry,” but they were unable to provide any evidence justifying the ban.
The newspaper reached out to the head of the parliamentary office, Misrak Mekonnen (PhD), to ask why The Reporter was prohibited from entering the parliament. According to the newspaper, Misrak responded, “I did not issue any ban. I have not been to the office due to illness, but I will inform you once I return.” However, the newspaper noted that even after Misrak returned to the office, no response was provided.
It was reported that the verbal order preventing Reporter’s journalists from entering came from the deputy head of the parliamentary office, Nigussie Meshesha (PhD). When Reporter posed the same question to Nigussie, he responded via a brief text message, stating, “I neither restricted nor banned anything.”
The newspaper stated that the ban was imposed without any official announcement or order from the parliament, describing it as “neither legally nor morally appropriate.” Reporter has called on relevant government bodies (the legislature, judiciary, and executive) to provide a resolution to the issue.
