Toronto – Fano forces in Gojjam, where continuous fighting against government forces has persisted for over a year, vowed on Wednesday to retaliate for the massacre of civilians, the pillaging of harvests and cattle, and the turning of churches and monasteries into military camps.
“We are forced to retaliate,” reads the title of a brief statement shared by Asres Mare Damtie on his social media page. Asres is the head of the political division of the Fano forces in the Gojjam area of the Amhara region. He is considered the second most influential Fano figure in the region, next to Zemene Kassie.
“Massacring unarmed civilians, destroying farmers’ harvests, committing sacrilege against places of worship, detaining citizens en masse, and carrying out extrajudicial killings of youth—along with several other anti-people acts—are ongoing,” Asres disclosed in his statement.
His remarks align with recurring reports from local sources and human rights organizations over the past several months. It appears that government forces are intensifying human rights violations in the region.
Earlier this month, the Ethiopian Defense Force Chief and other senior military commanders held a meeting with Amhara regional government officials. As previously reported by Borkena, the plan was to either decisively defeat the Fano forces by the end of December this year and bring the areas back under government control or withdraw the defense forces from the region altogether. During the meeting, the Defense Chief reportedly blamed regional officials for the repeated failures of military operations.
Reports from several local media outlets suggest that the mission is not proceeding as planned. Over the past year, extrajudicial executions and civilian massacres by government forces have often signaled faltering military campaigns in the region.
Asres Mare also accused the government of economic repression against the people of the Amhara region. He noted in his statement that restrictions have been imposed on basic commodities. He specifically cited the restriction of commodity supplies to Dembecha and Feres Bet, areas where intense fighting has been recurring and where government forces have reportedly suffered significant losses.
Furthermore, Asres alleges that government forces are looting oxen, which farmers rely on to plow their fields. According to his statement, a relative of Zemene Kassie has lost about 105 cattle.
“Unless the invading troops refrain from such actions, we will retaliate by confiscating the property and cattle of ruling party cadres and militia forces to compensate for our losses, in addition to continuing our battles on the front lines,” Asres warned.

Is this supposed to good news? What is good about one young man killing and maiming another young countryman? All these young men and women were supposed to be in schools catching with the rest of the advancing world. But that is not to be. They have been bamboozled and hoodwinked by connivers specialized in feeding on the raw emotions of the hapless and naive youth. It is being pushed out cities, towns and small towns by cruel despots just to end up being the cannon fodder for the bigots camping out at some forsaken wilderness both in Amhara and Oromia regions. It ain’t all dandy for the youth of that country.
What makes me even sadder is there those among us who are using the stupid conflicts as a means to line their pockets. These shameless and faceless individuals are sending their children and grandchildren here to schools, after school activities and entertainment venues while urging and instigating the youth in the old country to kill and maim each other. They make that Oromo young man to hate everyone including those who they call Neo-Gobana Oromos except Oromos. They say anything to make that Amhara youth hate everyone else including those Amharas they call ‘Bandas’. They use terms like “neftgnas’, ‘Woyanes’ and ‘Oromummaa’ as pejoratives for their craft. Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn you niggers!!!!
Woe! Woe! Woe! Woe for those gullible young people in the old country!!!
We have been hearing reports that diseases like malaria are spreading unchecked both in Amhara and Oromia regions. Expect more suffering and calamities coming to that region. There are millions going hungry now already and all what it will take is a single 2-yr consecutive drought for thousands to die from famine. Even if that will not happen and the rains keep coming, their malnutrition body will be exposed to easily avoidable diseases like malaria, cholera and a host of other maladies. Stupid wars like this are never known to bring well-being to citizens. Death and destruction are on the menu of deadly and senseless conflicts. The primary victim is the gullible youth. His schools are forcibly shuttered or torched to the ground. His playgrounds are turned into recruiting offices for the bigots and connivers roaming the wilderness and the despots in towns. His former friends from childhood are on the opposite side ready to drop on him with their deadly AK47’s. Ain’t a living for the youth in Amhara and Oromia regions. Woe, woe, woe, woe!!!
What a headline”
“Rebel Forces in Amhara Region Vow Retaliation for Civilian Massacre” you mean they are running too fast from the brave ethiopian defence forces?
Civilians are dying because of those ignorant fighters against their own country under the name of Amhara. I condemn all civilian killing in every part of the world, including on those evils led by Benjamin Netanyahu, but we need to clearly understand that the so called FANO babies are the one who made their movement inside a society and now society has to pay for their ignorance.
