Three people, including filmmaker Anteneh Teherk, were killed by unidentified gunmen in Welkite town amid rising security concerns in the Gurage Zone

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Three people, including prominent filmmaker Anteneh Teherq, were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the “G and P” area of Welkite town, Gurage Zone, according to reports by Deutsche Welle Amharic citing eyewitness accounts and local residents.
Local sources reported that heavy gunfire erupted around 9:00 PM on Thursday, lasting for approximately half an hour. Tekelq, known for his work in local film production, was killed while performing work-related duties. Family members and close associates confirmed the fatal shooting, describing the assault as a sudden and brutal attack.
Residents and local commentators emphasized that armed ambushes, extrajudicial killings, and ransom abductions have escalated across the Gurage Zone over the past four years, particularly within the Abeshge and East Sodo woredas. Local accounts indicate that armed groups operating in peripheral border zones routinely target civilians, leading to widespread fear and severe restrictions on daytime and nighttime mobility.
Attempts to secure official statements from security officials in the Central Ethiopia Region and the Gurage Zone administration were unsuccessful. Regional authorities previously acknowledged ongoing security challenges during a public peace forum in Welkite, where Central Ethiopia Region Chief Administrator Dr. Yetmgeta Asrat outlined efforts to restore public order using traditional conflict-resolution frameworks, including the local “Joka” system.
