The defense force has not remarked on this particular incident. However, there was a narrative circulating on social media that those killed were Fano forces, including Tesfa Mekasha, detained by the Fano groups.
Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) on Monday released a statement saying the government’s “digital media has been deployed because the ‘terrorist prosperity group’ has recently been worried that the Amhara is uniting.”
Fano said Tesfa Mekasha has been toiling to bring about the unity of fano forces extensively hiking across the Amhara region meeting Fano leaders – ostensibly to foster a move towards unity among the rebel groups. Currently there are two major Fano groups operating in the region, and talk has been underway to unite them.
