Toronto – The Amhara region of Ethiopia is reportedly experiencing even worse price hikes for some food items. It is observed in different locations in the region.
Residents who spoke to DW Amharic reportedly said that some food items have seen very high increases so much so that it has become a challenge for man. Mulu Moges, a resident, told the source that one kilogram of berbere (it is one of the essential food items in Ethiopia) is selling up to 650 Ethiopian birr and a liter of cooking oil up to 300 Ethiopian birr. This was the Waghmura zone of the region.
Another resident from Feres Bet, West Gojjam Zone, of the region told the source that the price for the same food item has gone up. It is described as “a very high increase.” The price of beverage crops like coffee has also shown unprecedented price increase. A kilogram of coffee bean is selling up to 900 birr. The price is second grade coffee beans, not premium quality.
Bahir Dar city has experienced similar price hikes for these items too, according to Woizero Segenet Mekonnen, a resident of the city who spoke to DW Amharic.
The region’s revenue office has reportedly confirmed the hikes in the prices of some commodities and food items. It appears that the office is swinging to penalize businesses over the price hikes. During the ending fiscal year, the office has fined more than 80,000 businesses in the region in connection with price increase. It remains a question if the approach can overcome the price hike problems.
The region has been under extensive and brutal war for the past two years which is said to have a crippling effect on economic activity in the region in addition to humanitarian crises. There have been reports of famine-like situations in areas like Waghumra. The war has also jeopardized the provision of social services. As many as five million students are said to be out of school.
And there does not seem to be an end in sight to the conflict despite the government, via the defense chief of staff, this week claiming that it has annihilated the rebels forces in the region. Narratives from local news sources paint a starkly different image. On Sunday, rebel forces in Gondar claimed that they shot down a military helicopter in the Dembia zone of the region. Intense fighting was also reported in Gojjam, other parts of Gondar and Shewa area of the region.
