Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Toyo Solar, located in the Hawassa Special Economic Zone, where he observed the company manufacturing solar panels that generate power from sunlight, according to a statement released today by the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry.
The Prime Minister noted that the solar factory has the capacity to produce high-quality products and uses a modern production system. He also expressed his hope that the company will contribute to the country’s foreign trade growth by exporting its products to other countries, the ministry stated.
The Ministry disclosed that Toyo Solar has invested approximately $110 million in two phases within the Hawassa Special Economic Zone, which is managed by the Industrial Parks Development Corporation. It added that it created employment opportunities for over a thousand Ethiopians.
It’s known that Ethiopia was suspended from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in January 2022 for allegedly being involved in human rights violations related to the Tigray conflict that lasted for two years. Following the suspension, it’s reported that several foreign companies exited the country, and led many industrial parks to lose revenues.
