(Nairobi, Kenya) — More than 72,000 out of 80,874 residents in Abergele Woreda, located within the Wag Himra Administration of the Amhara Region, require urgent emergency food assistance due to severe drought conditions triggered by El Niño.

According to Meseret Weldeyesus, Head of the Woreda Agriculture Development Office, over 90 percent of the 17,941 hectares of cultivated land across the woreda failed to produce crop yields. In several administrative areas, including the Ambadago, Debina, and Beleka kebeles, agricultural harvests failed completely.

The compounding drought has severely impacted local livelihoods, displacing 1,531 individuals from 241 households who were forced to abandon their homes. Local officials confirmed that extreme conditions have also led to the closure of religious institutions and monastic communities across affected areas.

Data from the Woreda Livestock and Fisheries Development Office highlights devastating losses to the pastoral economy. Acute feed and water shortages have resulted in the deaths of 27,717 sheep and goats, 8,909 cattle, 1,129 camels, 3,198 poultry, and 1,035 bee colonies. While livestock mortality spans the entire woreda, conditions remain most critical in kebeles 013, 014, and 015.

Woreda administrators and community leaders have issued an urgent appeal to federal authorities and international humanitarian agencies for immediate emergency food aid, supplementary animal feed, and veterinary medical supplies to prevent further loss of life and livestock assets.
