Toronto – Over 240 Hawassa University Employees allegedly terminated unlawfully.

The employees were mostly janitorial and student cafeteria staff.  One of the employees spoke to Borkena on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.  “The employees stopped [terminated] work. 243 employees are on their own,” and in the streets.

Asked if the administration organized a meeting before terminating them, one of them said “they did not discuss it with us; they just threw us to the field.

“Elders including women are crying on the street; we could not get a solution,” he added.

According to the employees, they have stopped working  since October 6 and did not get two months pay.  The workers also allege that they are unaware of the reason they are terminated.

Another employee, a female, who worked in the student cafeteria for sixteen years told borkena “we have been working and they terminated us without a notice since Meskerem 25 (October 5).

They told borkena that they do not have money to pay for house rent and that their children are on the verge of dropping out from school due to the financial situation of the parents.

The workers apparently had a union.

On Tuesday, they were given an appointment to meet with the university administration and they anticipate getting an explanation as to why they were terminated.

Borkena staff based in Addis Ababa repeatedly attempted to reach the University to see if the university had a response for the allegation. The phone was not answered.

Our reporter found out that over 800 employees who were pushing for salary increments over a year ago have been facing pressure.  The employees who allege that they are terminated were part of the bigger group of employees who were pushing for the increment.
