Toronto – Over 100 people are reportedly arrested in Abeshge district of Gurage zone of South Ethiopia in connection with the Fano movement. They are arrested on alleged grounds of “terrorism.” Many others have fled the area to avoid arrest.
According to a BBC Amharic report published on Tuesday, massive arrests started to take place in June this year.
About 90 of them have reportedly appeared at Wolkite court after twenty-two days of arrest.
The arrest mainly focused on ethnic Amharas. There are also reports of beating and harassment against those who are allegedly identified as suspects of “fano supporters.”
About sixteen kebeles in Abshege district of Gurage zone, ethnic Amharas live in large numbers. The district has a total of thirty kebeles.
BBC Amharic cited family members of those arrested from Walga Kebele of the district, which is said to be only 30 kilometers from Wolkite, ethnic Amharas were arrested because of their identity.
Peace and security office authorities in the Gurage zone claim that those arrested are suspected of “firearms circulation and kidnapping.”
Ethnic Amhara’s in the area have been under pressure to disarm registered firearms after the outbreak of the war between the Federal government and Fano forces in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
“What they call Fano is any Amhara who is carrying a firearm,” a resident told BBC Amharic emphasizing that the arrest is ethnic based.
Members of the farming community in the area were armed with license from the government due to a security threat from a militant Oromo ethnic nationalist group that calls itself “Oromo Liberation Army” which is linked to the massacre of tens of thousands of ethnic Amharas in Oromia region.
According to residents in the area who spoke to the source, there had been arrests before June this year but it got worse since then.
The reports seem to align with stories ethnic Amhara arbitrary arrest in many areas of Oromia region and in the capital Addis Ababa after the official outbreak of the war in August 2023.

This Fano thing is everywhere, man. People were planning to move to Mars just to stay away from Fano but they found out these guys have already set up a base there too. Even here in USA they are everywhere. When I went to a local grocery store to pick up a few necessities, they were there to harass everyone who is not an Amhara. When I sat down to have coffee at home they just popped out of the cup. I called police and I was told they could not do anything about it because they are scared of them. Over there they are in every village and town. I’m gonna call The UN for help. I am shaking in my boots as I’m writing this comment. It is scary, man!!!!
I don’t t know why the owner/owners of this page allow you to post your worthless anti Amhara hatred all the time and yet they don’t post( probably deleting) other responses related to your ignorant statements. you never criticize the Oromo led tribalist government but you have the audacity to come out every time anything concerning Amharas is mentioned. There is a war being waged against Amharas in Oromo regions and you expect our people not to arm themselves to protect and defend against the genocidal government and the various oromo terrorist groups who are supported by Abiy and his Oromuma parliament. Fano is coming to Addis Ababa you like it or not. its not Fano’s goal and ambition to come to 4 kilo to amass power and wealth but to liberate our people from the ongoing killings and displacements. We will not rest until our people are able to have a permanent peace and security for generations to come. And We shall do it.
The other one menacing every one every where is this thing called OLA. They are everywhere man. I packed up everything I own including my family to go as faraway as Saturn to avoid them and live in peace and security but I was told they are there already. I went to the local a local juice joint with my Amhara friend to pick up our favorites and bingo, they were there picking on every one they think an Amhara. They call them ‘Neftegnas’. Their breath stink, man! They roughed me up calling me ‘An Amhara hugging Neo-Gobena’. I ended up with a bloody nose and bulging eyes but I saved my lifetime Amhara friend. I called the police and they told us they could not do anything about it because they are scared of them.
So we came back to my house and sat down to enjoy our favorite juice. Suddenly, bam!! They just popped out of the cups of our juice. This OLA thing is not only in Minnesota, Toronto, Tennessee, Atlanta, Michigan, Utah, Oregon and Down Under but everywhere stinking up neighborhoods, dude!!! I heard they just tested a nuke bomb successfully and landed a space craft on the planet Uranus. They hate ‘Neo-Gobenas’ like me with a passion that they have killed me a million times. Poor me!!!
