Toronto – The Militant Oromo Nationalist Group – Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) – on Wednesday claimed a military gain against government forces.
Describing the Ethiopian Defense Force as “Abiy’s forces,” it said 256 of them were killed and 179 others wounded. ”
It also said that it has captured 122 during combat operations. Among those captured are district administrators. OLA did not name the names of the administrators.
“In a sign of systemic collapse, troops are abandoning positions, leaving behind camps, Ural trucks, and Zu-23 anti-aircraft weapons,” OLA said in a brief update it published on its social media page.
“Zu-23 cannons, hundreds of AKMs, scores of sniper rifles, SKS carbines, ” are seized, according to OLA.
The operations were in the East and West Shoa area – Ada Berga, Meta Robi and Meta Walke areas in the zone. The locations are within less than 100 kilometers to the capital Addis Ababa.
OLA’s claims are not independently verified. The Ethiopian Defense Force did not remark about it.
There were times when the OLA forces made significant military gains in recent times. The group is said to have clandestine support from within the government structure across the Oromia region.
It has mostly been operating in the Wollega zone where it had assassinated several government officials.
The group has also been linked to looting of state owned banks, kidnappings of individuals and the massacre of ethnic Amhara communities in the rural areas – particularly in Wollega. However, the group denies the allegations.
