Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Amhara region of Ethiopia has exported more than 20,000 kilograms of opal to the international market over the past nine months of the Ethiopian fiscal year, generating over $7.4 million in foreign exchange, according to the region’s Bureau of Mineral Resource Development, as reported by the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).
The Bureau’s Director, Haile Abebe, stated that this export achievement marks a significant contribution to Ethiopia’s foreign currency earnings. “The revenue from the opal exports demonstrates the growing role of the mining sector in the regional economy,” he said.
Additionally, the region supplied 76 kilograms of gold to the National Bank of Ethiopia within the same period.
Haile also noted that efforts are underway to increase value-added opal production for export in the remaining quarter of the fiscal year. “There is a strategic focus on maximizing the region’s mining potential to support the national economy,” he added.
Berihun Abera, head of mining license administration at the Mineral Resource Development Office in Delanta Woreda, confirmed that high-value opal production from the area was successfully delivered to the central market. He highlighted that 1,457 kilograms of the exported opal had undergone value enhancement, contributing to higher returns.
According to Berihun, 30 traditional mining associations are currently engaged in opal production in Delanta, underlining the role of local communities in the sector.
In the previous budget year, opal exports from the region earned over $2.36 million, showing substantial year-on-year growth in both volume and revenue.
