Over 100,000 participants expected for the virtual protest against Ethiopian government

Toronto – Ethiopian Opposition party figure and activists have organized a massive virtual protest to demand an end to war in Ethiopia and a ruthless dictatorship in the country.
It is organized with the theme “Stop the War! End Authoritarian Rule! Let Peace Prevail!”
“This protest is intended to serve as a powerful expression of the people’s demand for peace and their rejection of state-sponsored violence,” The organizers stated.
It is announced that it will be held this Saturday starting at 10:00 A.M. Washington Time. The event is expected to have over 100,000 online participants at the same time.
The event will be livestreamed by many Ethiopian news outlets based in the Diaspora including Reyot Media. It will be done so on platforms like YouTube, Rumble, and other social platforms.
15 notable key politicians and opposition figures are scheduled to speak during the event, according to Lidetu Ayalew who has been coordinating the “YeAbronet Ethiopia movement” for several weeks.
They are from Ethiopia and abroad.
In an interview with Ethiopian Media Services, Lidetu revealed that Taye Dendea, former state minister for the Ministry of Peace in Ethiopia, was one of the invited speakers. However, the Ethiopian government arrested him on Monday.
When a few Ethiopian politicians in the opposition party attempted to organize a peaceful “anti-war” demonstration in the capital Addis Ababa in November 2024, the government banned it on alleged grounds that there was a security concern in the capital. It also arrested the organizers who happened to be prominent figures known for their political activism in the opposition quarter.
War has been one of the key hallmarks of Nobel Peace Prize Winner Abiy Ahmed’s government. Months after the end of what is said to be one of the most devastating wars in the history of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed’s government launched a military operation in the Amhara region in August 2023 which morphed into a full fledged large scale devastating war.
Devastating in terms of the loss of civilian lives, economic and social activities in the region. As many as 5 million students are said to be out of school. Heath centers are impacted in many ways including artillery shillings and drone strike by government forces. Humanitarian crisis is spiraling up.
Apart from the Amhara region, the Oromia region of Ethiopia has also been experiencing war for about six years now. In the north, there are fears that war might break out between the TPLF and Eritrea on the one hand and Abiy Ahmed’s Federal government on the other.
The organizers are urging Ethiopians from all walks of life to attend the virtual protest on Saturday.
