Toronto – A landslide accident in North Gondar, Amhara region of Ethiopia, on Saturday killed ten people. Eight others have reportedly sustained injuries with a serious condition.
The incident happened in Telemet district Abna kebele, Nola locality, in North Ethiopia.
This year Ethiopia experienced recurring landslides in different parts of the country – the devastating one being one that happened in Gamo Gofa, South Ethiopia in July 2024. Over 250 people are reportedly killed in that unprecedented tragic incident.
Early this month, there was another one in Wolaita , also South Ethiopia. 11 were reportedly killed.
The country has been receiving high rainfall during this “kiremet” season. The months of June, July and August are the rainy season in the country.
The Ethiopian government has failed time and again to initiate a scientific study to identify areas vulnerable to landslides and evacuate residents.
After three landslides that claimed hundreds of lives in a span of less than two months, the Ethiopian government does not still seem to have plans to mitigate impacts of landslides by evacuating residents to a safer place.

I have been watching the weather radar on the Horn of Africa and noticed the entire area from the farthest northern point of Eritrea to Moyale in Ethiopia being drenched by heavy rain almost daily. I took it as good news as these two countries have been planting billions of trees in the effort to re-forest their eroded landscape. In one way, Mother Nature is giving helping hand by watering the seedlings. Heavy rainfall has consequences. Flooding in plains and river banks and landslides devastating populated areas situated in mountainous and escarpment locations. This is what happened and is temporary. Now, this is when we should all get together and shine by helping the victims of this natural disaster. We should pitch in the last penny in our pocket in the blessed effort. It is nobody’s fault as deadly landslides happen even in the most advanced nations. They have been in the news here in USA, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Switzerland, Scandinavian countries and other developed countries in Asia killing scores of people almost every year. Let’s help those generous and upright citizens.
