Fano forces reportedly killed over 50 Ethiopian government forces

Borkena
Toronto – The latest reported devastating fighting between the Fano forces and Ethiopian government forces took place in Kutaber area of South Wollo – less than 30 kilometers north west of Dessie. The battle occurred on Friday.
Government mostly deployed militia and anti-riot forces along with defense forces, sources with links to the area reported.
50 government forces are killed or wounded in the area. Fano leaders from the area confirmed the number. They also claim to have seized more than 30 combat rifles and Bren machine guns. There appears to be casualties on the side of Fano’s too but they did not disclose the number.
Abebe Fantaw, Amhara Fano in Wollo Public relation, told Anchor Media most of the victims from the latest fighting in the area are militia and anti-riot forces. These are basically mobilized from the region. Fano leaders and supporters see the involvement of militia and anti-riot forces as an action with sinister motive to make the war “Amhara against Amhara” as opposed to what it was when the war started in August 2023 ; between the Federal government and fano forces.
Abebe described the death of member’s of the militia and anti-riot forces “saddening.” However, he said that Fano forces are left with no choices when they are deployed to kill fano forces.
Fano’s attack on government forces camps in the area turned out to be an hours long intense battle. And it came on day 18 of what the Fano forces call “operation unity” (See borkena reports).
The Ethiopian government did not remark on the outcomes of the battle near Kutaber and Dessie. Access to information is not guaranteed, and government authorities often do respond to inquiries to media outlets that are not affiliated with the government.
In a related development, there was another intense fighting further north in the Woldia area. According to Ethio News, the government has suffered another devastating defeat in the Kalim area. Government forces were reportedly forced to retreat to Sanka and Woldia areas.
The war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia – which was started in August 2023 when the Federal government declared a military operation for a “few weeks” – is clearly not less devastating than the war that ended in November 2022 with the signing of the Pretoria agreement. Apart from taking over five million students out of school, the magnitude of destruction, the loss of civilian lives and the humanitarian crisis is only spiraling up. Yet, this is a conflict that is essentially ignored by the International community.
