It Is IMF That Is Managing The Ethiopian Economy, Not The Ruling Party

Borkena

Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Thursday appeared at the Ethiopian parliament. In his response to questions from members ( he skipped some of the questions), he mostly focused on economic matters. As has been the case most of the time, he attempted to paint a positive image in how the Ethiopian economy is performing.

He made wild claims. Over 23 million people were lifted out of the safety net program in the ending Ethiopian budget year, the Ethiopian economy is growing at a rate of over 8.4 percent and Ethiopia will start natural gas production in September this year. The reality on the ground is different and several economists have been questioning Abiy Ahmed’s claims. One of them is Teshome Abebe, a former Provost and Professor of Economics based in the United States, reflected on the Ethiopian economy vis-a-vis ruling party claims. He tends to think it is the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that is managing the Ethiopian economy, not the ruling Prosperity Party.
