Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) have signed an agreement to construct solar minigrid and solar park projects using solar power technology.
In a statement released today, the Ministry said the agreement includes financial and technological cooperation for solar park and solar minigrid power generation, as well as for irrigation and potable water supply.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Sultan Wali, State Minister for the Energy Sector at the Ministry of Water and Energy, stated that a conducive environment has been created for Ethiopia’s private sector to invest in power supply.
The State Minister also highlighted that the expansion of solar power development plays a significant role in improving citizens’ lives. He added that a policy to promote private sector investment in solar power and agricultural development in Ethiopia is now in effect, creating excellent opportunities for private investors.
Ashish Khan, Director-General of the International Solar Alliance, stated that the organization, which includes 124 member countries, including Ethiopia, is working to expand solar power technology development and increase citizens’ benefits.
The Director-General added that over the next two years, the ISA will provide support to develop solar-powered water pumps by expanding small-scale electricity supplies that boost agricultural productivity.
Yemisrach Sisay, Director-General of the Ethiopian Solar Energy Development Association, noted that the association is undertaking policy consultations, financial mobilization, and capacity-building activities in the sector.
