Addis Ababa, Ethiopia– The Information Network Security Administration (INSA) announced that it is in the process of completely replacing widely used communication software in Ethiopia with domestically developed alternatives.
According to Sheger FM, a local station based in Addis Ababa, INSA stated that international software, including email, Telegram, and WhatsApp, have been replaced by locally developed software and are now providing services in government institutions.
INSA said that in addition to its cybersecurity efforts, it is developing software for public use, and said it is replacing some existing ones.
Eshetu, a sales expert at INSA, told the media that this measure was necessary because “using foreign communication methods could lead to the exploitation of even highly classified national information.” He also added that the “Ergamail” software developed by INSA is being used as a replacement for email in their institution and other government organizations.
Eshetu also said that a software called “Sirkuni” has replaced telegram and whatsapp, especially in governmental institutions. He added that “Debo” software is under INSA’s development to use for zoom meetings.
“In addition, INSA developed and presented the payment system that the tax authority uses to collect taxes, as well as the modern cadastral system prepared to register each landholding,” said the expert Eshetu.
The report also indicated the existence of other software being prepared by the INSA, including the software aforementioned above, which could replace all international software.
It is also said that the software developed and handed over by INSA so far for government institutions to provide public services has eliminated paper-based processes. In particular, it has enabled more efficient tax collection, and the cadastral system is said to have prevented the theft that used to occur by issuing two or three maps for a single landholding.
