Ethiopia Dominates Great Manchester Run 2025: Selemon and Medina Cruise to 10K Victory

Toronto – Ethiopian Athletes on Sunday won in both men and women divisions of 10k race at the Great Manchester Run.

Selemon Barega won the men’s division clocking  27:49. He finished ahead of his Uruguayan  Athlete Santiago Satfore only by three seconds.  Although the weather condition was windy, everything else was perfect during the race, according to the World Athletics report. 

Selemon was the Tokyo Olympic champion in the distance race which took place in 2020.  This event was his first Great Manchester Run race.

Manchester Evening news quoted him as saying  “This is actually my first 10k road race outside of Ethiopia, which is actually quite hard to believe. I’ve completed all over the world over 10,000m on the track but it’s strange to think that this is my debut on the roads outside of home. I’m excited to compete in Manchester in such a big race with a great history.”

Kenyan Athlete Vincent Ngetich claimed bronze crossing the finishing line in 27:58 minutes.  Mosinet Geremew , another Ethiopian athlete finished  fourth in 28:21 minutes. 

Woman’s Category

In the Women’s category Medina Eisa won the gold finishing the distance in  (ETH) 30:42. The 2022 World Athletics Championship Marathon winner Gotytom Gebreslase, also Ethiopian Athlete,  finished third in 31:11 minutes. 

The 20 years old champion Media is rated as “Ethiopia’s rising star.” She was the winner of 5000 metres race at the 2022 and 2024 World Under-20 Championships.

Kenyan Athlete “Obiri battled Gebreslase for second, but then both were closed down and passed by USA’s Emily Sisson, who finished second in 31:03,” World Athletics wrote. 

More than 30,000 competed in the 10,000 kilometers and half marathon event, according to the source.
