Toronto – West Gondar Quara Zone alleges that Fano forces suddenly entered Gulegu town in the district and vandalized government offices.
Quara Communication Affairs Office on Thursday shared on its social media page that it called “The Extremist” entered “Gulegu town in West Gondar Zone Quara district and attacked government sectoral institutions burning 74 offices, 3 vehicles and took away 1 vehicle.”
The office shared a picture of burned pick up vehicles and vandalized offices.
Furthermore the office claimed that fano forces damaged properties belonging to 20 individuals some of whom are said to be senior government and ruling party officials in the town.
In terms of damage to government institutions, the government alleges that a school, peace and security office in the district, the district council, road and transport office, district administration office , government communication office, justice office, the district’s health office are some of offices that Fano forces targeted in the attack.
A committee tasked to assess the extent of the damage after the incident has also reported that Fano forces took police uniforms – which seems to suggest they were in control of the police divisions in the town.
Based on the extent of the damage reported by the Quara District government communication office, it appears that the Fano forces had control over the town at some point. Notably, this is one of the Amhara regions where there is a high number of government troop deployment.
Fano Forces have admitted that they were in control of the town for hours. However, they denied that they were involved in vandalizing private and public prosperities in the town.
Yohannes Nigussue, Public Relation of Amhara Fano National Force North Amhara Belay Zeleke Command, on Thursday spoke to Ethiopian Media Service. He said “our forces did not commit any vandalism in the town.
However, he admitted that Fano forces seized a vehicle while leaving those vehicles in the town needed for crucial services like Ambulance.
Responding to the accusation of vandalization, the government said forces the government organized might have committed it so as to tarnish the image of Fano.
In June this year, Ethiopia’s Defense Chief of Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula told the Ethiopian Parliament that “the armed groups operating in the country are 90 percent annihilated and the remaining 10 percent will be completed soon.”
Meanwhile, Fano forces in other parts of the Amhara region including south Gondar continue to make claims of significant military gains.
