Getachew Reda holds high-level talks with senior US and UN diplomats in New York to address East African security architecture and regional stability

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Getachew Reda, Minister and Advisor to the Prime Minister on East African Affairs, held high-level bilateral discussions with US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemarie DiCarlo on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
According to updates released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomatic engagements focused on regional security architecture, trade cooperation, and peace stabilization efforts across the Horn of Africa.
During his briefing with UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemarie DiCarlo, Getachew outlined Ethiopia’s current national developments and broader security dynamics across East Africa.
He emphasized the necessity of coordinated multilateral action to build sustainable peace across the sub-region, reaffirming Addis Ababa’s commitment to supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict in neighboring Sudan. In response, DiCarlo confirmed the United Nations’ ongoing support for Ethiopia’s regional peacebuilding programs.
In a separate bilateral meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State Frank Garcia, Getachew reviewed shared regional security priorities and discussed mechanisms to expand bilateral trade and investment flows between Addis Ababa and Washington.
The discussions built upon momentum established during high-level bilateral talks held in Washington, D.C., in May 2026. Both officials agreed to step up joint monitoring across key engagement pillars, including defense cooperation, regional stabilization, and commercial partnerships, pledging to maintain close communication on East African diplomatic strategies.
