General Tsadkan’s Says “Unable To Travel To Tigray Due To Few Leaders And Shabia Secret Agents”

Toronto – General Tsadkan Gebretensae, Ethiopia’s Former Defense Chief of Staff and veteran combatant of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, has not been recently remaking on the developments in the Tigray region.

On Friday TBS TV aired an interview with him which is in Tigrigna language. Several Ethiopian Media outlets operating in the country including TIK VAH had extensive coverage on his interview. 

” I regret that I can not enter Tigray due to a few leaders who claim to be senior commanders of the army and infiltrating Shabia [reference to Eritrean government] agents,” Tsadkan is quoted as saying.

He has also shared what appears to be a critical view of General Tadesse Worede, President of Tigray Interim Administration. For Tsadkan, he is not a leader with the will or determination to bring about change in the region. He rather sees him as a figure interested in restoring TPLFs’ political domination agenda back to the region’s government structure. Particularly, he sees him as one with the view that “there is no difference between the people and the TPLF.”

Tsadkan also questions the very process that led to Tadesse Worede’s appointment as President of the Interim Administration. It was the federal government that appointed Taddesse to the position in April this year in a very politicized ceremonial event organized in Addis Ababa in the presence of the diplomatic community.  

He tends to think that the Federal government erred in appointing Tadesse as the interim president of the region. He is not alone. Gebru Asrat, another former TPLF executive who turned out to be a leader of the opposition Arena Party, has been saying that the process under which Tadesse became president of the interim administration is flawed. It lacks legitimacy and representation. 

Apparently, the federal government’s decision to appoint a figure acceptable to the TPLF was a form of appeasement to avoid conflict with the TPLF. However, the decision seems to have only delayed the possibility of another conflict, not averted it and the conditions in the region seems to suggest that the TPLF continues to have stronger control over Tigray region than the Federal government. 

Tsadkan’s New Political Move 

General Tsadkan has revealed another key development. He said four political entities operating in the region have launched a political movement to challenge the TPLF under Debretsion Gebremichael who is reportedly working with Eritrea. 

The Tigray name for the new movement is ምንቅስቓስ ደለይቲ ለውጢ it could translate to “Reform seekers movement.”  Arena Tigray, Wunat, Baytona and the newly formed Semeret party are members of the new movement. 

Regarding his role, he said he is serving in a military leadership capacity along with General Teklay Asheber.  He is also the chair of this movement. Focus area of the movement is to avoid another war in the region (as they accused that the TPLF is working to trigger another round of war), establishing a formal regional government, political reform in the region and preparing for the next election “as TPLF has lost legitimacy.”
