Toronto – 30 people reportedly killed in Gamo zone, South Ethiopia, particularly in the highlands of the region due to flashflood because of heavy rain and land slide.
Apparently, the accident occurred on the night of March 10.
Gamo zone government communication has confirmed the natural disaster which it described as “sudden accident.”
There has been a recurring landslide disaster in the zone particularly in the past few years.
In July 2024, over 229 people were killed due to landslides caused by heavy rain in the same zone.
In August 2024, another 11 people were killed due to another accident in Wolaita.
At the time the government was talking about identifying vulnerable areas to landslide and evacuating residents from it.
The zone administration shared updates on its social media page on Tuesday expressing condolences to the victims and their families.
However, it did not disclose demographic information about the victims. There is a possibility that several members of the same family were killed.
The administration said it is working to provide assistance to those affected by the accident and “following and supporting” to avoid additional damage without specifying the nature of the action.
