Toronto – Former president of Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council First Hadji Mufti Umar Idris laid to rest on Monday in the capital Addis Ababa.
Hundreds of thousands of people attended the funeral. A farewell ceremony was organized at the Millennium Hall. Senior government officials and religious leaders attended it.

A story the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council shared on its social media highlighted that Hadji Mufti Umar has served over fifty years teaching the Islamic faith at the Grand Anwar Mosque and Nuur Mosque in Addis Ababa.
Furthermore he published over 50 religious books, and has taught Qur’anic interpretation over 300 times, as indicated in the disclosure from the council. He has interpreted Quran
He has also served as leader of the Ethiopian Religious Affairs Council.
The entire country, irrespective of religious identity, grieved on the passing of Hadji Mufti. His exceptional contribution in conflict resolution including those with religious character earned him respect and love among Ethiopians.
More importantly his teaching on love and unity at a time when Ethiopia was experiencing rattles from ethnic based violence that claimed thousands of lives – especially in the Oromia region of Ethiopia – has left an indelible mark.
First Hadji Mufti Umar Idris was highly respected among Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church leaders.

Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Abune Mathias was seen weeping during the farewell ceremony at the Millennium Hall. A picture of him in tears went viral among Ethiopians on social media.
First Hadji Mufti Umar is survived by his wife and nine children – five sons and four daughters.
