Toronto – Another shocking security incident reported in Fiche Gerba-Gurracha, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

Gunmen attacked a passenger’s bus near Alidoro town, between Fiche and Gerba-Gurracha towns.

Yeshoferoch Andebet, a social media based advocacy for long distance intra-Ethiopia drivers, said the gunmen fired at the tires and the windshield of the bus.

Borkena attempted to reach out to government authorities in the area but it was not a success.

The number of casualties from the attack is not immediately clear. However, it is confirmed that the passenger bus (pictured) was damaged and that dozens of passengers were abducted.

However, the source indicated that the driver might be at least hurt as the windshield, including the driver’s side,  was hit with a bullet several times.

There has been a recurring attack targeting passenger buses in the same locality of the Oromia region of Ethiopia.

Gunmen usually demand for a hefty ransom to release passengers they abduct from buses they target.

The ruling prosperity party and Oromia regional state has been linking the incident to Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) – an ethnic Oromo Nationalist militant group extensively operating across the region.

However, the group denies ransom kidnappings and attacking civilians in the region.

The security crisis in the country, particularly Amhara and Oromia regions, is one of the reasons Abiy Ahmed’s administration faced a legitimacy crisis.

His government paints incidents like these as   the “works of the enemies of Ethiopia” whose aim is to obstruct his “government’s focus” on economic development.

The security crisis as a real problem affecting the country including in the form of making intra-town and intra-region mobilities a risky business is not even recognized as something that deserves government attention to be a priority area.

The government is yet to remark on the latest incident.

  1. This is called ‘liberating people’ and not kidnapping by the students of the Lenchos and Ibsa’s. I guess. The money is not ransom but to cover the expenses spent to liberate the citizens from the veteran soldiers of the late Selassie regime. That was what the Rastaman wannabe camping out at a joint in Western Oromia told me. I’m just telling you what he said. Don’t kill the messenger here. Get your story straight.
