Toronto – Ethiopian Federal Supreme Court on Wednesday reversed federal court decision to grant bail right to Sisay Awgechew.
Third Bench of the Federal court Feb 23 ruled he be released on a 100,000 birr bail. However, he was detained as he was leaving Klinto prison facilities on February 28. The circumstances of his arrest was reported as “abduction.” Family members were not informed as to who arrested him and where they were taking him.
Later, his lawyer Solomon Gezahegne told Ethiopian Media Service that Sisay was seen waving his hand from inside a vehicle and that he said he was heading to the Federal police.
He was arrested in connection with the conflict in the Amhara region of Ethiopia and was one of the defendants in Dr. Wondwossen Assefa’s file. They were accused of “terrorism” with the aim to take government power by force.
After several hearings the third bench of the Federal court ruled that his case is not as “terrorist” and that he could follow his case after being released on bail.
It means that Sisay will stay in prison.
Meskerem Abera and Genet Asmamaw are on the same file. These are ethnic Amhara activists and journalists who were thrown to jail soon after the Federal government declared a state of emergency for what was statedly planned was a “few weeks” military operation in the Amhara region to disarm Fano forces.
In a related development, Yohannes Buayalew, who was a member of Amhara region council and once a senior member of the ruling prosperity party, is reported to be seriously ill in prison. He is also facing, along with Christian Tadele, a member of Ethiopian Parliament and Chair of the parliamentary Standing Audit Committee, and Kassa Teshager, Addis Ababa City Council member, “terrorism” charges.
