Investigators Claim Suspects Conspired to Overthrow Constitutional Order While Defense Highlights Lack of Progress and Minimal New Evidence

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Three suspects—EPRP Public Relations Head Yisaq Wolday, party member Abebe Akalu, and defense attorney Abera Negus—appeared before the Federal High Court, Lideta Division, First Instance Bench, as investigative police requested an additional 14-day remand period.
Police presented technical evidence to the court alleging that the suspects illegally mobilized youth to organize, train, and arm themselves under the guise of self-defense against state security forces. Investigators further claimed that the suspects collaborated with anti-peace forces to recruit members and expand underground networks across Addis Ababa.
According to police, the individuals conspired to overthrow the constitutional order by force by establishing political, military, propaganda, and operational wings to threaten state security institutions.
Outlining progress made during the previous 10-day investigation window, police reported taking a deposition from one witness, submitting seized electronic devices for forensic analysis, and requesting technical intelligence from the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). Additionally, investigators retrieved financial records from five banks and investigated a violent incident in the Hadera area near Arba Minch, South Ethiopia Region, which resulted in 17 civilian deaths, the displacement of 23 households, and over 13 million Birr in property damage.
Police argued that an additional 14 days are required to record statements from remaining witnesses, complete forensic examinations, and assess the full extent of casualties and destruction. Investigators emphasized that due to the complexity of the case involving domestic and foreign actors, releasing the suspects on bail poses a high risk of witness intimidation, destruction of evidence, or flight.
Defense lawyers strongly contested the extension request, arguing that police had sufficient time to gather evidence from Gamo and Arba Minch and lacked meaningful progress. The defense highlighted that while the police investigation file contained roughly 300 pages during the prior hearing, investigators presented only 50 to 60 pages, demonstrating a lack of new evidence.
After hearing both sides, the presiding judge adjourned the court to review the case file and determine the remand request. A ruling is scheduled for August 28, 2026.
