Toronto – At least 15 are killed and 27 others wounded after a train accident in the Somali region of Ethiopia. However, it was reported later there were two more wounded passengers.
The accident occurred on the night of Monday when the train was travelling from Dewale to Dire Dawa. Workers on the train are among those killed in the accident.
BBC Amharic cited Mohammed Adem, the regional state communication head, as saying the conditions of those wounded is a serious one. That may increase the number of death toll from the tragic accident,
Emergency response workers were deployed to the scene of the accident. Those wounded had been taken to hospitals in Shenele, Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa.
The cause of the accident is not definitely determined. It is indicated that an investigation is going on to establish it.
However, Mohammed Adem indicated, as reported by BBC Amharic, that the train was in service for a very long time. No further detail if the train was serviced recently.
What is known so far is that the accident occurred when the train collided with a parked freight lorry on a downhill area between Dewale and Dire Dawa. They were loaded with floor and sugar.
Mohammed Adem is also cited as saying that the train had a “motor issue.” Again, it is unspecified if it was discovered after the train was deployed
Musfata Mohammed, president of the Somali regional state, on Tuesday conveyed a message of condolence on his facebook page.
In a message he wrote in Somali language, he said “May Allah give patience and faith to the relatives, relatives and all the civilians of the region that they left. May Allah heal those who are injured,” as translated by Facebook.
