Addis Ababa, Ethiopia– A fatal traffic accident in Sekota Woreda, Waghimra Nationalities Administration of the Amhara region, has left five people dead and eleven others injured.
According to the Waghimra Communication Bureau, the incident occurred when a minibus taxi (plate number AMA 30336) overturned in the Afera Got area of Kebele 07, near Dabele Mariam Dibir. The vehicle was reportedly transporting a body from Dessie to Sekota when it crashed.
Among the deceased are three men and two women. The injured include seven men and four women, suffering injuries ranging from minor to severe.
Inspector Sisay Aberaw, head of the Road Safety Traffic Section at the Sekota Police Office, said an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
The incident adds to Ethiopia’s ongoing road safety challenges. Federal Police data show 3,149 fatal crashes occurred between 2021 and 2022, while the World Health Organization reported a traffic fatality rate of 25.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 2013—one of the highest globally.
