Toronto – Fano forces are claiming partial control of Kobo town four days after reporting killing 40 government soldiers in Lalibela area of the Amhara region.
Continued fight reported for a fourth day in a row.
Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) earlier this week cited Fano sources to report that over 40 government forces were killed when Menelik Command of Fano forces ambushed them on their way from Lalibela to Gashena.
According to the source, the rebel forces had information about deployment of government soldiers to transport logistics to Gasehna town.
The rebels did not specify if there were casualties on their side and the Ethiopian government has not remarked on it at the time of this writing.
On Wednesday, Abebe Mulat, military spokesperson of Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM), told EMS that Fano “has partially controlled Kobo town and is advancing.” Well over 250 government forces were killed, Fano claimed.
He also reported a heavy battle in the Muja area – in the Lalibela zone.
The spokesperson also reported a battle in Mekane Selam, Amahra Saynt, South Wollo. In this area, the government reportedly deployed both infantry and mechanized units.
Civilian targets including places of worship were targeted with artillery shelling. According to the spokesperson, St. Gabriel Church near the Mekane selam area was attacked with artillery.
Fano’s claim of military gain was not independently verified. The Ethiopian Defense Force has not remarked about it at the time of this writing.
On the other hand, on Monday this week, the defense force said “members of the extremist group who were operating in the Gondar town area surrendered.” While the defense update attributed the story to Colonel Ashenafi Berke, the number of forces who allegedly surrendered was unspecified. However, a picture of about seven individuals (purportedly members of the rebel groups) posing for a picture with a defense force commander was shared.
