TORONTO, Canada — Fano forces operating under the Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) claimed on Tuesday that they have successfully reversed an extensive, week-long military offensive launched by the Ethiopian Defense Force.
In a phone interview broadcast Tuesday on Ethiopian Media Services, Estibel Alemu, deputy public relations head for the AFNM Tewodros Command in West Amhara, stated that three military generals and four colonels led the operation.
According to the spokesperson, the military deployed mechanized forces and heavy artillery across the Dega Damot area of Gojjam, a key stronghold for Fano forces. Alemu alleged that the artillery shelling targeted civilians—aligning with recent resident reports covered by Borkena regarding civilian casualties in the area. Four weeks earlier, Fano forces claimed a major military victory in the same region, though the Ethiopian Defense Force neither confirmed nor denied those claims at the time.
Alemu described the ongoing battles as intense, noting that government forces aim to secure the Chokie Mountain chains, with fighting still active across multiple fronts.
Earlier this week, state-owned media broadcast statements from General Mohammed Tessema, commander of the Ethiopian Defense Force’s Eastern Command, announcing an intensive military operation in Dega Damot to eliminate armed groups and claiming significant success. However, the military statement did not specify casualty figures or seized weaponry. Alemu dismissed General Mohammed’s claims as propaganda.
