Toronto – Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice Party (EZEMA) on Sunday announced that it has elected Eyob Mesafint to lead the party.
The party called the Emergency Congress ahead of the 7th Ethiopian General Election which is scheduled to take place in June this year.
This was the second emergency congress in the seven year history of the party. Senior members of the party and invited guests attended it.
Professor Berhanu Nega, who is one of the co-founders of the EZEMA and who has been in the opposition Ethiopian politics for several decades, was removed as the leader of the party and made way for the younger emerging leader Eyob Mesafint.
The party believes that Eyob will transform the party to the next chapter.
The party has been suffering from public trust and faced a legitimacy crisis as a credible opposition party due to relations that has fostered, as Professor Berhanu’s leadership, an arms-length kind of relation with the ruling Prosperity Party.
Professor Berhanu Nega took a cabinet position as Minister for Education where he led a range of reform measures aimed at restoring quality of education,as he believes, in the country. He has received extensive criticism for it although there were also those who tend to think that reform was needed.
However, his political stance in relation to Prosperity Party policies – including the war in the Amhara region and the unpopular corridor development which displaced hundreds of thousands of Addis Ababa residents – angered many including those who used to support him.
Not much is known about the new leader and it remains to be seen if he is capable of addressing the political crisis the party faced over the past few years.

Congratulations Sir! I wish you and your party success in your current and future endeavor. It is a heavy load and pressure cooker. As a man of peace, I urge you to continue leading your party in its current path of peaceful struggle. That country has seen enough death and destruction since 1974. Enough, enough, enough is enough with that!!!
