Abdi Ali Barkad
Honourable people of Ethiopia,
During my time living and studying in my country Ethiopia, I witnessed firsthand the deep sense of unity that has long distinguished Ethiopia. This unity was not based on ethnicity, religion, or political loyalty, but on a proud, shared identity rooted in the historic name “Ethiopia.” The people demonstrated patriotism, mutual respect, and a collective commitment to their nation, a rare and admirable quality.
Today, however, Ethiopia faces significant political and social challenges that threaten this long-standing cohesion. The rising tensions, regional conflicts, and competing political interests risk pushing the nation toward instability similar to what befell Somalia decades ago. This is a matter of real concern, especially for those of us who deeply value Ethiopia’s stability and historical legacy.
Ethiopia is a country blessed with abundant natural resources, fertile land, diverse cultures, and a resilient population. Its potential for growth and regional leadership is immense. To protect this potential, Ethiopia must uphold peace, strengthen its institutions, and preserve national unity at all costs.
Groups such as FANO, OLA, and TPLF must understand that political power should never come at the expense of the nation’s stability. Their current power-driven agendas lack a unifying national vision that can safeguard Ethiopia’s long-term future. Ethiopia, as a federal republic composed of multiple regions, requires cooperation, not competition, that tears apart its social fabric.
For Ethiopia to progress, political reform is essential. The country must embrace a genuine multi-party system where diverse political voices can participate fairly and legally. A system dominated by a single political force cannot address the needs of Ethiopia’s varied communities. Democracy flourishes only when people have the freedom to choose, debate, and contribute without fear or exclusion.
Therefore, I strongly urge all political leaders, civic groups, elders, intellectuals, youth movements, and every stakeholder invested in Ethiopia’s future to come together for an inclusive national dialogue. Only through collective discussion and compromise can Ethiopia resolve its internal disputes and chart a future that benefits all.
A Diplomatic and Academic Message to His Excellency Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali
Your Excellency Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed,
Your leadership has overseen a number of visible transformations and developmental achievements throughout Ethiopia. These accomplishments include, but are not limited to:
• Major improvements in food security and agricultural productivity.
• Rapid industrial development that has created new economic opportunities.
• Expansion of energy infrastructure, including renewable energy projects that position Ethiopia as a potential regional power supplier.
• Beautification and modernization of Addis Ababa, turning it into a more livable, vibrant capital city and other major Towns.
• National infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and public transport systems.
• Expansion of regional connectivity and investment in digital transformation.
These achievements deserve recognition. They demonstrate a vision for progress and modernization that many Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia appreciate.
However, Ethiopia’s political landscape remains fragile. Ethnic tensions, regional disagreements, and political polarization threaten to overshadow the progress made. As a young leader with extraordinary potential and international visibility, you have the unique opportunity and responsibility to prevent Ethiopia from descending into conflict or fragmentation.
We urge you to:
• Restore political inclusivity by forming a government that represents all nationalities and regions.
• Open political space for opposition parties in a constructive and peaceful manner.
• Promote reconciliation between communities and political groups.
• Strengthen national institutions based on fairness, transparency, and rule of law.
• Prioritize unity over short-term political gains.• Lead Ethiopia toward lasting peace through dialogue, not confrontation.
• Promote national dialogue as a primary mechanism for resolving political disagreements.
• Cultivate an environment where peace, justice, and equitable development are accessible to all citizens.
Ethiopia is a nation with centuries of history, remarkable achievements, and unmatched cultural diversity. Its unity is its greatest strength. Without unity, no nation, no matter how rich or historic, can survive the challenges of the modern world.
Therefore, we encourage you, Mr. Prime Minister, to safeguard Ethiopia’s stability and build a legacy defined by peace, national cohesion, and enduring development.
Ethiopia’s future depends on leadership that brings people together, not leadership that divides them. The responsibility lies with all of us, but especially with those who hold the power to make decisions that affect the nation’s destiny.
May Ethiopia remain a beacon of hope, strength, and unity for generations to come.
