TORONTO, Canada —  Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) on Monday disclosed that Yishak Wolday, the party’s public relation head, Abebe Akalu, Party Member, and the Party’s representative in Benishangul Gumuz, Dereje Delena, are still in prison.

In early September this year, court ruled that two of the EPRP members (Yishak and Abebe) along with Aberea Negus, Addis Ababa based lawyer who was arrested with them, be released on a 50,000 birr bail.

However, the Federal police, however, appealed against the bail decision. And the suspects are still in custody.

The party is opposing that the appeal process is taking time disregarding the rights of the suspects.

In a statement it released on Monday, it said “after a court has given a decision on bail, an appeal submitted against that decision should be considered quickly in accordance with the legal procedure. Courts should appropriately weigh the right to freedom of the suspects and the urgency of the matter, so that the appeal process itself does not become a reason for a period of detention that does not come to an end.”

There is also a situation where suspects are not even given bail right, as in the case of Dereje Delena who is still in custody. The party sees it as something that disregards the law.

Citing the constitutional right of freedom of expression, the party asserted that a political activity or any political conviction should not make citizens outside of legal protections of rights.

It called on the court to examine the appeal and pass a decision ungently.

It also called for the trial process not to be prolonged through recurring adjournments beyond the time it is needed and a respect for the suspects right to justice.

The party called for the case to be considered quickly in a transparent way on the basis of the law.

EPRP calls for the case of its members to be considered quickly, transparently, and on the basis of the law.

Notably, dozens of journalists and politicians have been detained for several years now on alleged charges of attempting to “overthrow government by force” and of “terrorism” charges. On the eve of this Ethiopian News year, some prisoners who agreed to sign a “pardon document” ,  self-incriminating, were released. Dozens decline to sign it in exchange for release from prison.
