Eleven Political Parties Unite to Form New National Party

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia– Eleven political parties have united to form a new national party today, which has been registered and recognized by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

According to Sate-owned Fana BC, the parties that formed the coalition are:

• Agew for Justice and Democracy
• Agew National Council
• Tigray Democratic Party
• Donga Peoples’ Democratic Party
• Mocha Democratic Party
• Argobba Nationality Democratic Movement
• Afar Liberation Front Party
• Gamo Democratic Party
• Kaffa Peoples’ Democratic Organization
• Kaffa Green Party
• Gambela Peoples’ Democratic Movement

It is said that the parties are holding a founding assembly today.

The parties have reportedly been preparing over the past year to meet the requirements and create a conducive environment for their merger. Details have yet to be disclosed regarding the basis on which these parties are merging, including their manifesto, to inform the public of their intent.

During the opening speech, Melatework Hailu, NEBE’s chairperson, said to have praised their step to forge the new unified party which she reportedly said it’s a signal of narrowing the parties’ differences gearing towards a principle of mutual respect

The Chairperson said to have commented that the parties’ coalition is an example of hope, peace, and the strengthening of democracy, and she affirmed that the board will provide the necessary support.

It is known that national elections will be held  in May 2026.
