Toronto – Weeks after news of Djibouti port deal with Egypt, which was widely seen among Ethiopians as another action with the aim to suffocate Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Sunday led a delegation to Djibouti.
He was greeted by President Ismail Omar Guelleh upon arrival at Ambouli International Airport in the morning. The president also hosted a luncheon for the Ethiopian Delegation.
The two leaders then had what the office of the President of Djibouti described as “One on one meeting.” It took place at the palace. It was unspecified if the event was open to journalists.

There were also meetings in the presence of members of the delegation from Ethiopia and Djibouti officials. The progress of projects between the two countries – apparently related to port facilities as Ethiopia relies on Djibouti for the bulk of its import and export trade shipment – discussed the outcome of which is not revealed at the time of this writing.
Alemu Sime, Berhanu Tsegaye, Daniel Kibret Getachew Reda and Redwan Hussien were part of Abiy Ahmed delegation – among others. The delegation later visited doraleh port.
Much detail about the meeting between the two leaders is not released to the public regarding details of what was discussed during the meeting. From the brief social media update Abiy Ahmed shared on his page, the discussion “focused on geopolitical dynamics, regional peace and security, and strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, logistics, and development, reaffirming our shared commitment to stability, economic integration, and mutual prosperity.”
The office of the president of Djibouti framed what was discussed differently. It said “Their discussions focused primarily on the practical arrangements to be implemented to accelerate the execution of bilateral cooperation programs.”
But again no further detail was provided except stating that the meeting “revealed numerous points of convergence.” According to the office of the president, the outcome from the meeting will serve as “a framework and guide the work of the next joint ministerial commission. This commission will be held in Djibouti on January 19, 2026.”
The two leaders spoke to the media after their meeting. President Ismail Omar Guelleh is quoted as saying “Mr. Abiy Ahmed is a brother and an enlightened leader, working to continuously strengthen the privileged ties between our two nations.”
Abiy Ahmed on his part remarked “Djibouti and its President are valuable allies for Ethiopia ” without making a reference to the president.

There has been a noticeable public resentment in Ethiopia towards Djibouti following its latest deal with Egypt – a country that has been encircling Ethiopia by entrenching presence in the neighboring countries including Eritrea and Somalia.
Tension is mounting the Horn of Africa as Ethiopia and Eritrea are inevitably, as some politicians in the Tigray region see it, heading to war over Ethiopia’s push to get access to the sea which Eritrea sees as a violation of its sovereignty. The narrative widely promoted on Ethiopian state-owned media is that “The port of Assab was illegally given to Eritrea,” and finger is pointed at the late Meles Zenawi’s administration who is said to have requested the United Nations to administer a referendum for the secession of Eritrea.

In charts: how chicken went from luxury to staple
“The protests began around a fortnight ago in Tehran’s bazaars over rampant inflation but have spread to more than 180 cities and towns across the country, morphing into general protests against the regime.
Concerns over inflation came to a head when the prices of basic goods like cooking oil and *chicken* dramatically spiked, with some products vanishing from shelves altogether.” CNN

Few foods better exemplify the transformative power of the modern food system than chicken. Consider the UK’s experience: within living memory, the way chicken is produced and consumed has changed dramatically, so that what was once a rare and expensive treat has become an everyday staple.
But this is only part of a global trend. Today, chicken outstrips any other meat consumption worldwide. ” ‘Financial Times’
This son and product of Dire Dawa was in Addis/Finfine last week to deliver a message from Al-Toweel Isu to the cooks at Arat Kilo. My long time homeboy Yemane confided to me this morning that Al-Toweel Isu had ordered President Ismail to come to Asmara pronto last week and gave him the assignment. The message reveals a new story about Assab. During the recent trip to Riyadh by Isu the Saudi government has decided to invest to the tune $200 billion in US dollars in Assab now and up to 1 trillion in US dollars in the next 5 years to build the biggest factory in the world to manufacture lithium batteries for electric vehicles and to power cities around the globe. It is not actually lithium but a new rare earth discovered by Al-Toweel himself. It is called Isuthium and turned out to be lithium on steroids. Isu single-handedly stepped on the mineral during one of his winter vacations around Assab. That is where he vacations during winter because Asmara is too cold with too much snow. So in the message those at Arat Kilo are being told once for all that Assab is no more available as an outlet to sea for those stupid people whose IQ is 69 when Isu and his people have IQ of 189.
