(Nairobi, Kenya) — Detained academic Dr. Wondwosen Assefa has entered the fourth day of a hunger strike at Zone 06 Prison, protesting severe detention conditions and demanding an immediate transfer, according to statements from his defense counsel and family members.
Dr. Wondwosen, relocated from Kaliti Prison to Zone 06 Prison on September 25, 2026, initiated the hunger strike on Sunday after prison authorities failed to respond to formal transfer requests. His legal representative, Solomon Gezahegn, stated that the environmental and sanitary conditions at the facility pose an immediate threat to Dr. Wondwosen’s life and physical well-being. The High Court is scheduled to review the emergency transfer application during a formal hearing on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Family members confirmed that Dr. Wondwosen’s health has deteriorated significantly since the start of the protest. His spouse highlighted severe sanitation concerns within the detention block, including infestations of insects and rodents, noting that Dr. Wondwosen suffers from pre-existing high blood pressure and is currently without access to necessary medical treatment. The family urged judicial and correctional authorities to grant an immediate facility transfer and ensure urgent medical intervention.
