Ethiopia deploys more troops to Tigray, Eritrea border

Ethiopia _ Tigray

Toronto – A week or so after Ethiopia issued an ultimatum to Eritrea alleging Eritrean troops presence in the North Eastern part of the region, credible information are emerging that the former is deploying mechanized units of the defense force and troops to the Eritrean border.

Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gedion Themotheos, purportedly wrote a formal letter last week to his Eritrean counterpart, Osman Saleh,  requesting Eritrea to withdraw its forces from Ethiopian territories. White a copy of the letter was widely circulating on social media, the ministry has not confirmed it. It did not deny it either.

Eritrea denied that it has controlled Ethiopian territories.

Video footage circulating on social media this week seems to indicate massive deployment of Ethiopian mechanized units moving reportedly to the border area with Eritrea.

About two-thirds of Ethiopian troops are reportedly heading to Tigray and the border with Eritrea along the North Eastern parts of the country.

Another possible sign of possible outbreak of the war sooner rather than later is that the Ethiopian Defense Force on Monday made a call to former members to reconsider rejoining the army.

Eritrea, on its part, has been preparing for war in response to the Abiy Ahmed’s government claim over Assab, a port city that used to be part of Ethiopia before Eritrea’s secession in 1991.

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which is allegedly working with the Eritrean government, has recently been making accusations that the Federal government is preparing for war. The organization called for the African Union to resolve the situation peacefully and work towards the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.

Last month, the Defense Force briefly engaged against the TPLF forces after the latter made moves to control Telemt area – which it claims as part of “Western Tigray.”  Its forces were targeted with drone strikes, according to sources from the area. However, the number of casualties were  unspecified.

Despite reports that Eritrea and Ethiopia are close to being on the brink of war, the international community does not seem to work to avert another bloody conflict in the region.
