Toronto – The Ethiopian Defense Force has claimed that “Operation Unity,” a military campaign in the Amhara region, was orchestrated by General Migbe Haile, a prominent military figure within the pro-Debretsion faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The Defense Force made this assertion in a “breaking news” style report, reminiscent of sensational YouTube content, seemingly aimed at capturing public attention.

General Migbe, a senior TPLF military leader, has been accused by the Defense Force of involvement in illegal gold trade through Eritrea. Additionally, he has been portrayed as the mastermind behind Fano’s “Operation Unity” offensive.

This week, Fano forces launched “Operation Unity,” a large-scale military offensive targeting over 35 Ethiopian Defense Force camps across the Amhara region.

The Defense Force has ridiculed Fano forces, in its “breaking news” coverage,  as “foolish” for initiating the operation and claims to have inflicted significant losses on them. According to the Defense Force, Fano forces suffered 576 casualties, with 125 wounded and 41 captured during the clashes. The operations reportedly took place in South Gondar, North Gondar, North Gojjam, East Gojjam, and North Wollo – among other locations cited in the report.

However, Fano forces present a starkly different narrative, asserting decisive victories across multiple areas of the Amhara region.

A report from Ethio News, which cites credible sources within the region, indicates that Fano forces have killed several military commanders during the ongoing campaign – Operation Unity, now in its third day. Among the casualties is Colonel Abata Molla, who was reportedly killed in Gojjam.

Fano forces have reportedly entered several towns, including Merawi in Gojjam and Lalibela in North Wollo. In Gojjam, over 190 youths detained by government forces were allegedly freed.

For over a year, the Ethiopian Defense Force has repeatedly claimed to have weakened Fano forces and “restored peace” in the region. However, multiple sources confirm that Fano forces still control over 80 percent of the Amhara region, contradicting the government’s assertions.
