Toronto – This week, Berhau Nega formally ended his role as a leader of Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice (EZEMA) after the party called an emergency congress.
He had an hour long speech in which he shared his views on Ethiopian party politics.
According to sources, said “Ethiopia is still a single party or a country of a ruling political party” lamenting on the failure to build a meaningful multi-party system.
He emphasized that Ethiopia can’t extricate itself from the tradition of a single dominant party rule.
The pursuit of building a peaceful country is “difficult”, in his words, when the country’s politics is configured along ethnic and religious lines. The party EZEMA itself claims to oppose ethnic politics. However, Berhanu has been recently facing widespread criticism as a supporter of an ethno-nationalist regime (prosperity Party). He has also been criticized for supporting, as cabinet minister, the war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia and the state of Emergency – which undoubtedly cost him a considerable political base. He is now seen as “anti-amhara” politician.
He also advised to avoid the habit of annoyance against one another and the need for a culture of politics based on “listening” and understanding.
He expressed regret that individuals with immense potential are avoiding politics for fear of insults. He expressed the Ethiopian political landscape ( seemingly in the opposition quarter) as one where “Decent ones with potential retreat for fear of insults and Ignorant daredevils gather.”
Berhanu Nega has been in Ethiopian opposition politics nearly for five decades but a dozen of them. EZEMA was the last party which led for seven years after cofounding it with others.
He has been controversial for several – particularly after he aligned his party with the ruing “Prosperity Party” under the guise of “providing critical support.” Many accuse him of buying the illusions of “providing critical support.” He held a cabinet position as Minister for education for nearly five years now.
Prominent political figures like Andargachew Tsege, who had been a comrade to Berhanu for several years, tend to see him as a hypocrite.
For Angargachew, the decision of Berhanu Nega did not come as a surprise as there had been a rumor over the past few weeks that he will resign as a leader. he said “it was also expected that his position would be handed to Eyob Mesafint” whom he described as “worshipper of Berhanu.”
As well, he argued that EZEMA as a party has been long dead and that Berhanu killed it.
Professor Berhanu Nega’s next political move is unspecified. However, there are talks that he (in his late sixties) will be retiring.
