ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – A high-level Austrian delegation, led by the Vice Minister of Finance, who also oversees mining, cybersecurity, and defense research, met today with Ethiopia’s State Minister for Finance, Semereta Sewasew. The discussion centered on strengthening economic and technical cooperation between the two nations. Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Simone Knapp, was also part of the visiting team.
This meeting builds on previous talks between Austrian and Ethiopian ministries, signaling Austria’s active interest in expanding its partnership with Ethiopia.
State Minister Semereta welcomed Austria’s proposals, underscoring Ethiopia’s drive to modernize its public finance systems and digitize government services. She highlighted “the urgent need to boost revenue,” and found Austria’s solutions particularly practical, especially considering guidance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The Austrian representatives presented their advanced public finance and tax solutions. The AED agency showcased its “Best Practice Austria” initiative, featuring an AI-based risk management system and a ready-to-deploy e-tax platform that can be implemented within a year. They also offered solutions for managing grants and subsidies.
In the realm of cybersecurity, Vienna-based Focus Group shared its expertise in detecting crypto fraud, along with training and process development, illustrating Austria’s ability to enhance Ethiopia’s financial security. Concurrently, Austria’s EPG, a company focused on mining, presented its environmentally sound solutions for mining waste remediation and the recovery of precious metals, often through partnerships with government entities.
Ethiopia expressed keen interest in attracting more diverse investments, especially in the mining sector, and in increasing its exports. State Minister Semereta emphasized the importance of “practical, sustainable solutions that build local capacity.”
This visit marks the second Austrian delegation to Ethiopia in nine months, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between the two countries.
